Centre Manager
40 hours a week / £22,000 / (27k FTE with accommodation) / Starting 1 May 2020

About the New Economy Centre
The New Economy Centre is a new residential training centre that is being set up by Stir to Action in Mid-Devon (Selgars Mill, Cullompton, EX15 3DA). The centre will host a range of educational and recreational activities, from residential workshops to retreats and small festivals to eco-weddings.
The majority of these events will be focused on supporting individuals and organisations to build the new economy movement, while we’ll also been open for B&B and glamping bookings. We expect groups of 15-25 people for most residential workshops.

Role description
This is a live-in role and you’ll use your experience as part of a small team to set up and run the New Economy Centre, playing an essential role in launching and managing the centre over the next few years.
Your work hours will be flexible and based on event bookings, averaging around 40 hours each week and the expectation of being on-call 24/7 for emergencies at least six days a week.
- You’ll work closely with the Site Manager (also currently advertised) to make sure the venue is able to host all events.
- You’ll work with the Programme Manager to manage bookings at the centre.
- You’ll be responsible for managing the accommodation facilities, e.g. guest arrivals/departures, laundry management, cleaning, room changeover, breakfast, and being on-call for resident emergencies.
- You’ll be responsible for general care, from restocking guest’s towels and toiletries.
- You’ll work with our Communication Manager to liaise with guests and participants via email and phone.
- You’ll be involved in volunteer management, planning activities and the general care of volunteers during their time on site.
- You’ll have basic bookkeeping skills, including filing and sending invoices.
- You’ll be responsible for maintaining health and safety in line with site policy and national regulations.
- You’ll be responsible for monitoring and reviewing fire safety during all events.
- You’ll be responsible for building security.
- You’ll have occasional hosting duties at workshops where appropriate.
- You’ll attend operational meetings with other staff members and the centre’s general meetings.

We're offering a permanent position, with employee entitlements.
You will report directly to the board of directors, which is made up of fellow workers who are the three founding members.
Accommodation is included with the role.
We have a full-site vegetarian policy.
Holidays
Due to the nature of the role, holidays will need to be booked well in advance to arrange staff replacement.
Membership
The successful applicant will begin a one-year members’ journey/probationary period after which they will be invited to join the New Economy Centre as a member/owner of the business, subject to the satisfactory fulfilment of your role.
As a member you will have democratic control within the business (one member, one vote) and will be eligible to put yourself forward to become a director.
Accommodation
The role includes accommodation, shared social and kitchen facilities, council tax, utilities, produce from the permaculture garden and proportionate personal use of accommodation for friends and family (when not in use for events). The salary is £27k FTE with a deduction for the above.

- Building maintenance: keeping the existing buildings and infrastructure in good repair.
- Booking and working with contractors where necessary.
- Managing the biomass heating system.
- Maintaining grey water and waste systems.
- Repair and maintenance of fixtures and furniture.
- Campsite maintenance of glamping infrastructure and compost toilets.
- Occasional woodwork and other building and crafts to enhance on-site facilities (e.g. building compost loos, window boxes, etc)
- Water systems management (sluice gate operation, clearing debris, bank maintenance)
- Some basic garden maintenance: grass cutting, pruning, and watering.
- Supporting event production and setup before and after the events.
- General security
- 24 hour availability for emergency repair work or site problems (e.g. flooding, fire, illness or injury)
